PROJECT DETAILS

A case study on the luxury watch brand, RGM Watches – branding / marketing / website – mhirsch.me/rgm

The Challenge

RGM Watch Co. occupies a category of one: the only vertically integrated American watchmaker producing in-house movements, hand-cut guillochè dials, and Grand Feu enamel at a level that competes with the finest Swiss manufactures in the world. The problem was that none of that was legible online. The existing site communicated function — product listings, contact information, a store — but it communicated nothing of the brand’s soul. In a market where Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet treat their digital presence as an extension of the object itself, RGM’s site created an immediate and jarring credibility gap. A collector discovering the brand for the first time, arriving from a Hodinkee article or a forum thread, would land on a page that felt categorically mismatched with a $125,000 tourbillon. The challenge wasn’t cosmetic — it was existential. The website was actively working against the brand’s ability to be taken seriously at the tier where it genuinely belongs.

The Redesign

The redesign began with a single constraint: every design decision had to earn its place the same way every component of an RGM movement earns its place — through purpose, precision, and finish. The visual language was built around the brand’s own material vocabulary: deep blacks that reference the oxidized plates of a German silver movement, warm gold drawn from the 18K plaques that distinguish the Calibre 801, and the Cormorant Garamond typeface — a high-contrast serif with the optical rhythm of a hand-engraved dial. Layout structures were drawn from the Rolex and Vacheron Constantin playbook: full-bleed editorial panels, cinematic split-screen storytelling, and a horizontal collection scroll that lets timepieces breathe rather than compete. The information architecture was reorganized around RGM’s three core proof points — in-house movement manufacturing, hand-cut guillochè, and Grand Feu enamel — treating craft as the primary narrative rather than an afterthought. The platform was designed to live natively on Squarespace, preserving the founder’s ability to manage and update content independently, with no loss of control and no technical dependency.

Why it Works

Luxury is not a price point — it is a feeling, and that feeling has to begin the moment a user lands on the page. The redesign achieves this through a layered system of micro-interactions and scroll-driven behaviors that transform passive browsing into something closer to the experience of holding the watch itself. The hero loads with a slow, cinematic zoom — the kind of deceleration that signals deliberateness, that nothing here is rushed. As the user scrolls, text and imagery move at independent rates, creating a sense of depth and weight that flat layouts cannot replicate. Watch photography transitions from shadow into clarity as it enters the viewport, mimicking the way a timepiece reveals itself when lifted from its case under light. The custom cursor — a gold point trailed by a soft ring — replaces the default pointer with something that feels considered, extending the brand’s material sensibility all the way to the user’s hand. Taken together, these details don’t announce themselves. They accumulate. By the time a visitor reaches the bespoke enquiry form, they have already been immersed in a brand experience that mirrors the precision and intentionality of the watches themselves — and that alignment is exactly what converts admiration into desire.

At RGM, meticulous detail is not a marketing phrase — it is a discipline. Every movement bridge, every polished jewel setting, every engine-turned line on a dial is executed by a craftsman who has spent decades learning the language of fine watchmaking.
